Poetry

Room 8 have launched straight into poetry this term. We started by looking at some of the language features usually found in poetry and have moved onto writing our own rhyming couplets. We worked with Mrs White today on these:

He went to the sea and caught a bee
The bee was a beautiful sight to see
Emelia F

There was a man who had a cat
The cat tried to catch a rat
Aiden P

There was a young man who had a pet pig
And he was so big.
He was ever so pink
And loved to wink
Po'oi K

There was an old man who had a pet cat
The cat sat on the mat
The cat caught a mouse and brought it into the house
The man was cross and showed him who was boss

Mrs Fala's cafe!

Mrs Fala's Cafe!

During Term 3, Room 8's math swap class have been learning about time and money with Mrs Fala.

Mrs Fala opened up her special cafe in room 8 for the students to practise working with money. They were given a $10 allowance and a menu that they were able to purchase from. Each child put together their own plate and worked out how much they'd spent and what their change would be.

Speeches

During the past two weeks we have been busy presenting our speeches to the class.

So far we have had some fantastic topics, e.g:
- What I want to be when i'm older
- Pandas
- Cars
- A world without people
- Snakes

And many, many more.

It has been fantastic to hear everybody's speeches and see all the hard work that went into writing and memorizing these.

Wish us luck for the semi-finals!

Scooter safety

Scooter safety with Constable Jude

During week 6 we were lucky enough to have Constable Jude come in and help us learn about scooter safety. On Tuesday she came in to talk to room 8 about the theory, then on Wednesday we put it into practice. We had a scooter course set up to ride our scooters around. There were give way signs, pedestrian crossing and cones to go around. We all had to pay attention to make sure we got around the course safely.

Descriptive writing

Room 8 have launched straight back into writing in Term 2. We are looking at descriptive writing at the moment and have been discussing characters that we are familiar with. We took some time to describe the characteristics of The Gruffalo. Here is a piece of writing by Skylar

The Gruffalo

The Gruffalo is an enormous beast that is freakishly ugly and really scary. He has two orange, shifty eyes and one poisonous wart on the end of his nose. He stomps everywhere looking for a delicious snack with his big creepy eyes and gobbles up whatever he finds. After he has devoured his snack, he goes somewhere else to look for another yummy thing that he likes to eat.

Math adventures

In Miss O'Neill's math class we have been exploring measurement. To start out, we became pirates and tested different ways of measuring distance to find the pirate's buried treasure.
We used things like...
- Domino's
- Feet
- People
- Counters
- Blocks

We found these all pretty inconsistent so decided to stick to our trusty rulers!

Friday 7 April 2017

Opera

We were lucky enough to have the opera come to visit us at Good Shepherd School. The whole school had a great afternoon watching the story of Don Pasquale unfold. Miss O'Neill even got debut as the celebrant!

Next time you are in room 8, see if you can figure us out!

Swimming

Room's 7, 8 and 9 have had THE BEST two weeks swimming at Dean Greenwood swimming school. We were split into three different groups to work with different instructors on our swimming techniques. The sessions were loads of fun and if we were lucky we got to jump into the deep end of the lap pool!

Picture perfect Picasso art

Check out room 8's art!

We sought inspiration from the famous Pablo Picasso to create our own works of art. We drafted our abstract portraits in pencil, then used crayon and dye to really make them stand out!

Don't they look fantastic?!
